Located in the middle of the north coast, life in the fishing village of Souvala centres around the harbour front, which offers a selection of traditional and fresh fish tavernas overlooking the sea. There are several bars, a pharmacy and a large supermarket. In addition, you will also find several mini markets, car and scooter hire, beach equipment and tourist shops, as well as the ticket office for the ferry boat which offers daily services from Souvala to the port of Piraeus on the mainland.
During the day, the atmosphere is sleepy. The main activity is watching the local fishermen unload their catches from small boats and spread their nets to dry in the sun. The small, sandy beach is just a few minutes walk away and offers crystal clear water and safe bathing. The beach has a small takeaway cafι and a taverna overlooking the bay. By night, the harbour area is the centre of village life and is at its most attractive, with the lights of Athens and the mainland twinkling in the distance.
Public transport is easily available, as the local bus runs a service between Souvala and the island capital of Aegina Town, well worth a visit. The many shops include some of our local crafts of pottery, leather goods and hand made jewellery, not forgetting our most famous produce, the Aegina pistachio, which is exported all over the world. The capital also has two small sandy beaches and a number of fascinating historical sites. From Aegina Town, you can also take the opportunity to explore other islands in the Saronic Group. Poros, Hydra, Agistri & Spetses can all be reached by ferry from here.
From Aegina Town, the bus service can transport you to other destinations of interest, including a route to the east coast and the lively seaside village of Aghia Marina. Along the way, you may wish to stop at the magnificent church and monastery of Aghios Nektarios, the Byzantine chapels of Paleochora or the incredible 5th Century BC Temple of Aphaia, just on the edge of Aghia Marina. Alternatively, you could take the bus down the picturesque west coast from Aegina Town. The Water Park at Faros or the sandy bays at Marathonas are all along the route to tempt you to stop for a while.
Carry on, and you will arrive in Perdika, a tiny traditional fishing village on the south west tip, where you can pause in one of the harbour front tavernas, famous for their fresh fish and locally produced Retsina, the pine resinated white wine. From Perdika, a short boat ride can take you to the uninhabited islet of Moni, where the sheltered bay provides wonderful swimming and snorkelling, or a walk in the pine forest offers the chance to feed the local inhabitants – deer, the Kri Kri goats or the wild but friendly peacocks! |
